Fall Coop Cleaning Checklist
Keeping your chicken coop clean is one of the most important tasks for maintaining a healthy, productive flock. A clean coop reduces the risk of parasites, disease, and respiratory issues, while also making things more pleasant for both your chickens and you. Whether you're deep cleaning for the season or doing regular maintenance, this all-in-one checklist will help keep your coop in top condition year-round.
1. Remove All Bedding and Waste
Start by taking everything out of the coop—bedding, nesting material, and droppings. Don’t forget to check under roost bars and corners where messes can collect. Use a shovel or scraper to remove caked-on waste.
Tip: Compost the used bedding for your garden! Chicken manure makes an excellent soil amendment once it has aged.
2. Scrub All Surfaces
Use a mild, non-toxic disinfectant or a solution of water and white vinegar to scrub down the interior walls, nesting boxes, roosting bars, and floors. Rinse thoroughly and allow it to dry completely.
Don’t forget: Clean the ceiling, walls, and door handles—mites can hide anywhere!
3. Air Out the Coop
Ventilation is critical during cleaning. Let the coop dry out fully before adding new bedding. If weather allows, leave the doors open for a few hours to air everything out.
4. Inspect Roosts and Nesting Boxes
Check for loose nails, splinters, or damage. Roosts should be smooth and secure. Nesting boxes should be clean and dry, with no evidence of mold or pests.
5. Check for Pests
Look for signs of mites, lice, rodents, or other pests. Use food-safe pest control products if needed, and clean any areas that show signs of infestation.
6. Refresh Feeders and Waterers
Scrub feeders and waterers with soap and warm water. Replace any damaged or cracked items. Clean equipment prevents mold, algae, and bacteria buildup.
Tip: Elevate feeders slightly off the ground to reduce contamination from dirt and droppings.
7. Restock and Reorganize
Refill nesting boxes with fresh straw or shavings. Replace bedding on the floor with a clean, dry layer. Reposition feeders and waterers for accessibility and tidiness.
8. Make a Maintenance Schedule
Regular cleanings prevent major issues. Consider:
-
Daily: Spot-clean droppings, check feed/water
-
Weekly: Replace nesting material, rake out soiled bedding
-
Monthly: Deep clean roosts and surfaces
-
Seasonally: Full coop cleanout and inspection
Your Flock Will Thank You!
A clean coop is more than just good housekeeping—it's essential for happy, healthy hens. Regular maintenance will help reduce illness, discourage pests, and keep your chickens laying consistently. Plus, it's a great opportunity to bond with your birds and check in on their well-being.
